Spring Perennial Exchange a Great Success

Over 80 Sussex and Lomond attendees emptied
out their plants and willingly shared them with the rest of us.  I want
to personally thank Patty Golden of the Lomond Association as she was
our resident expert on plants.  Everyone had a great time.  Also, the
Fall Perennial exchange will be sponsored by the Lomond Association so
you will have one more joint opportunity to transplant your yard within
    our community.

    Sussex Association President

    Summer Solstice Festival

Celebrate the longest day of the year with music, art, dance and culinary delights.  The Shaker Arts Council in cooperation with the City of Shaker Heights is sponsoring the 5th annual Summer Solstice Festival on Saturday, June 21, 2008 from 5-10 p.m.

Admission is free and open to the public and will be held rain or shine at the Shaker Heights Community Colonnade, 3450 Lee Road (between Chagrin and Van Aken Boulevards).

Scheduled musical performances include the musical drums of PANic Steel, Workmen’s Circle Klezmer Orchestra, Skatastrophes, an up and coming ska-pop-punk band and Mo’ Mojo Mama, a New-Orleans style zydeco band.  William Clarence Marshall, an audience favorite at “In Concert with Ludlow”, will return for an encore performance.

Art will be the theme with activities for children, street performers and hand-crafted creations from community artisans.  Local food purveyors will provide delicious, reasonably priced fare.  Inspired by centuries-old worldwide traditions, at dusk, rhythm specialist Cindy Hill will lead a circle of drummers around a glowing bonfire.  Drums will be provided or use your own.

Bring a lawn chair, blanket and comfortable shoes just in case the music brings out the dance in you.

Beginning Thursday, June 19th, the 4th annual Sounds Around Town will be showcasing live music from local talent at public venues through the week leading up to the festival.   Visit http://www.shakerartscouncil.org/  for the latest updates.

    Association Social/meeting

Thursday, June 12th 7 PM  Lomond Association General Meeting – Celebrating our Renewal – Join us in the Lomond Learning Garden (on Strandhill) for an evening of cake and conversation with your neighbors followed by regular meeting business inside.

    Dear Lomonders

It is with great sadness that I write to tell you that Carlton Rush died on Sunday, June 1.

Carlton was a valuable member of our neighborhood and an active and committed member of the Association.  He was very vocal during the creation of our Vision 2012 in the Spring of 2007.  Many will remember him for his recent passionate involvement with the Foreclosure Committee.  He worked tirelessly to inform us of the significance of the foreclosure crisis in the Lomond neighborhood and its impact on our housing values.  In our general meetings, he frequently helped us see issues from alternate perspectives, with carefully chosen words spoken in his deep, powerful voice.  He will be missed.

Both the viewing & funeral will be held at St. Cecilia’s Catholic Church at 3476 East 152nd & Kinsman.

The viewing will be Friday June 6th in the evening from 5-8 p.m.

The Funeral Mass will be on Saturday,  June 7th @ 10:00 a.m.
